Facebook Group Privacy and Visibility Settings

Today I'm going to explain the difference between the two Facebook Group Privacy options and the two Facebook Group visibility options that are available. I'll also show you how to update your settings in a group that already exists!

If you do not have a group yet, click here for a tutorial that will show you how to create a group and choose privacy settings during the setup process.

Which privacy setting to use #

You have two privacy settings: Public or Private.

Public means that anyone can see who is in the group and what is posted in the group, even if they are not in the group themselves.

Private means only members of the group can see who is in the group and what is posted.

I recommend choosing Private – this not only creates a safe space for members but also ensures that you will not be stepping on the toes of other consultants in your company by keeping your posts visible only to group members.

Which visibility setting to use #

If you choose Private as your privacy setting them you have the option to change your visibility settings as well. Your options are Visible or Hidden.

Visibile means that people can search for your group and request to join. You will still need to approve members once they request to join and also have the option to decline members as well. Visible also makes it so that you can let people click a link to request to join your group. This is helpful when using the AnchorCard Digital Business Card Facebook group call to action.

Hidden means that people cannot see your group unless you add them yourself. They cannot search for it and they also cannot see your group by clicking a link. If you’ve ever sent someone a link to your group but they say that they don’t see your group when they click the link, then your group is most likely set to hidden.

I recommend choosing Visible. Visible still allows your members to maintain privacy while making it easier for you to grow you group and add new members. If you are using an AnchorCard Digital Business Card your group must be set to Visible in order for your call to action to work right.

How to change your privacy and visibility settings on a group that is already set up #

If you do not have a group yet, click here for a tutorial that will show you how to create a group and choose privacy settings during the setup process.

To change your privacy settings in a group that is already set up follow these steps:

  1. Open your group on Facebook
  2. Click “More” in the menu under your cover photo
  3. Click “Edit Group Settings”
  4. Scroll to the Privacy and Visibility sections
  5. Choose the setting you want to use
  6. Click “Save”

Note: If your Facebook Group is currently Private you cannot change it to Public – this protects your group members who posted with the expectation that their posts would remain private. You can always switch between Hidden and Visible though.
